Drywall grid built for soffits in Orchard Lake, Michigan on new custom home
Multi is a leader in innovation in the drywall industry in Michigan.
Another way in which Multi is constantly working to provide a better product for its customers is another new innovation that we have implemented: "Butt board."
There are four sides to a sheet of drywall. Two are referred to as the tapered edges, or recessed edges. And the other two sides are referred to as the “butt” ends of the drywall.
· Tapered or recessed edges: On a typical sheet of drywall, the two long sides of the drywall are typically tapered. When two tapered edges are installed next to each other, the two tapered edges for a little valley on the wall which our finishers finish with drywall mud. The tapered edges create a flat surface which is undetectable to the eye.
· Butt ends of the drywall: On a typical sheet of drywall, the two short edges do not have a taper and they are referred to as the “butt” ends of the drywall. Two butt ends that are installed next to each other create a “butt joint.” Because there are no tapered edges, when our finishers add mud to a butt joint, we actually create a little hump in the wall. It is these little humps that your eye detects as imperfections. Two butt ends of drywall can never be flat when mud is added – it’s just logic and physics. As a result, our tapers spread the mud to create an extremely gradual hump around the butted ends of the drywall with the intent to be able to trick your eye into thinking the wall is actually flat.
To help solve the challenge of finishing the butt edges of the drywall, we are utilizing a product called “Butt board”. But board is a thin piece of OSB that we put behind the butt joint and causes a natural recess between the two butt edges of the drywall. Even though the board is not tapered, the butt board creates the same effect as if the ends of the drywall was tapered.
Here's how they work and their advantages:
